logo_palmetto.gifGreenacres Turf Farm is committed to environmental sustainability, and have stringent input controls over watering and fertilising practices. This has lead to a world wide search by the Directors to source and evaluate low input grasses - which has resulted in the release of Palmetto Soft Leaf Buffalo.

Similar to traditional Buffalo in appearance, Palmetto has a very soft leaf, and, unlike older traditional scratchy Buffalos, it is not likely to irritate young children's skin. Palmetto has outstanding winter colour; is tough, hard wearing, and has a low fertiliser requirement.

Environmentally Friendly

Finished_Palmetto_II.jpgThe reduced mowing requirement of Palmetto, whilst maintaining a quality turf grass surface, is without doubt its most significant feature. For example, the average home lawn requires weekly mowing in peak growing season, at a mowing height of 8-12mm, to provide a functional surface. Using Palmetto at a mowing height of 20-30mm, would require mowing every 3-4 weeks.

Conventional lawns can be mowed up to 24-48 times per year. Palmetto could be reduced to 12-16 times per year. This represents a reduction in mowing of 40% or greater. The reduced mowing on a large scale, or even a domestic home lawn, can represent a significant reduction in fossil fuel emissions without factoring in green waste. It is estimated there are 27 million domestic lawn mowers in the United States, mowing lawns weekly, which, converted to fortnightly or even monthly mowing, would make major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Why Choose Palmetto?

Palmetto___Adequate_Water.jpgFrom humble beginnings, Palmetto has since grown to be the world's number 1 soft leaf buffalo, with over 10,000 acres grown in 12 different countries. There are over 37 growers Australia wide, with over 400 acres in production. It is Perth's premier soft leaf buffalo with nearly 100 acres in production grown from Busselton in the South, to Wanneroo in the North. It is estimated there are over 10,000 home lawns with Palmetto growing in a range of different soil and climatic conditions.
