What is the best turf for me?

The answer to this question is dependant on your budget, and circumstances such as lifestyle; and whether you intend to sell your property in the short term or the long term. The Buffalo varieties of turf have a considerably higher purchase price. However, Buffalo lawn is considerably cheaper to maintain than the Couch varieties, meaning your initial high cost investment in your turf becomes a lifetime investment.

What Soil Type is best for laying my turf on?

Generally, the best turf-laying soil is a free draining type of soil, such as a sandy loam.

How much is my new turf going to cost?

The answer to this question is dependant on your preference; whether you would like a Couch lawn or a Buffalo lawn.

If you wanted to lay a Couch variety like Winter Green or Santa Ana, you can expect to pay between $4.30 and $5.50 per m2. If you wanted to lay a Buffalo variety, such as Palmetto or Sir Walter, you can expect to pay between $10.20 and $12.00 per m2.

These prices are all dependant on the quantity you require. The more you order, the less you pay.

What is the best fertiliser to use, and how often should I fertilise?

The best fertiliser to use is a general-purpose balanced fertiliser. You can purchase this when you order your quality weed-free turf from Greenacres Turf Farm.

I have been told about the Winter Green variety of turf. Is this a good variety to install?

Because people generally know of Winter Green turf by name and not variety, they don’t realise that Winter Green is actually a Couch variety of grass that is highly invasive through its network of stolons (runners) and rhizomes (underground runners). Therefore, one needs a physical depth of at least 100-150mm to stop it from going underground and invading garden beds.

Palmetto or Sir Walter lawn does not have this problem, as it only grows as stolons (surface runners).

How often should I water my lawn?

Once the grass is established, watering should occur approximately two – three times per week.

I have heard a lot of great things about sub-surface irrigation. Is it really the best system to use?

Sub-surface watering is considered one of the better options.  However, as Greenacres Turf Farm maintains a 'traditionalist' stand point, we still recommend surface irrigation as the best watering method.

This is particularly applicable to the Palmetto and Sir Walter soft leaf buffalo varieties.  As they are established on surface runners, they need water to come from the surface in order to establish, and survive.  If you have installed sub-surface irrigation, and then laid Palmetto or Sir Walter soft leaf buffalo, you will also need to apply several hand waterings for the lawn to survive.

You will notice that your lawn isn't getting enough water when it starts going brown and crunchy.  If you're not sure, contact our professional sales staff for more information.

Is there a totally drought tolerant lawn?

There is no totally drought tolerant lawn. However, Adrian Pitsikas has been officially recognized by the Water Corporation for producing water efficient turf.
Greenacres Turf Farm completes extensive field testing of each variety of turf they grow before it is sold to the public. This means that each variety of turf grows on the farm for approximately 3-5 years, and undergoes extensive field testing before it is marketed to our customers. Because of this, part of Greenacres Turf Farm’s dedication to providing quality turf and products is to only grow water efficient lawn varieties such as Palmetto and Sir Walter Buffalos.

What varieties of lawn stay green all year?

At what ground level do I need to have my soil prior to installation, if the area is going to be reticulated?

The soil needs to be leveled at 10-12mm below existing driveways and pathways, so that your Greenacres Turf Farm lawn will be level, or slightly above, them. For ease of maintenance, the top of your pop-up sprinklers should be level with the soil so that they pop up through your Greenacres Turf Farm lawn.

How do I remove existing lawn?

If the existing lawn is an old couch variety, or a Kikuyu lawn, spray the area with a glyphosphate type chemical, such as Zero or Roundup. Leave the area for two weeks, and repeat the application to ensure you have killed all the grass and weeds.

Remove the top 50-100mm of weedy/grassy mix and replace the soil with clean, free draining soil such as sandy loam.

Roughly re-level the area, and install reticulation (or fix your existing system). Once you have done this, do a final re-level of the area. The soil level should be 10-12mm below adjacent driveways and pathways.

Commission your reticulation system and make sure all the sprinklers are working properly, and are at the right levels. The top of the sprinkler needs to be flush or level with existing soil so that the pop-up can pop up through your Greenacres Turf Farm lawn.

Spread a lawn building fertiliser, and water the area lightly.

Top

At what height should I mow my lawn?

The answer to this question depends on the variety of turf that you installed. Ideally, couch varieties should be mowed at about 10-12mm to keep it looking healthy and lush. The superior performing Buffalo varieties such as Sir Walter and Palmetto should be mowed at approximately 15-30mm high.

It's the height of summer, and my lawn is really brown and crunchy. What do I do?

Brown and crunchy lawn in the height of summer is indicative of a lack of water and nutrients. You will probably want to apply a fertiliser, and perhaps a wetting agent, so that you can still stick to your current water regime, and continue to see results.
