Tall Fescue & Other Cool Season Varieties
Greenacres Turf Farm pride themselves in being warm season turfgrass specialists. However, we also have some cool season variety turgrasses in production.
The primary cool season turfgrass in production at Greenacres Turf Farm is Tall Fescue. Tall Fescue is a long-lived perennial grass common in cool season climates of Europe, West Asia and some parts of Africa. It is a tufted coarse-level grass, with unbranched tillers arising from deep, underground rhizomes. Its loose open seed head may be over 300mm long, and long flat leaf blades become tapered at the end. It is closely related to perennial ryegrass, but is more drought tolerant.
Generally used for sports fields and pasture, Tall Fescue is the best of the temperate perennial grasses for supplying nutritious fed in late spring and early summer.
Although Tall Fescue is a hardy, extremely wear tolerant lawn, it uses about 40% more water (as with other cool season grasses). This substantially reduces its water efficiency levels. As Greenacres Turf Farm pride themselves in producing only quality, water efficient turf grasses, we do not market Tall Fescue to the general public.
