Soil Information

Prepared_Surface.jpgThe best compliment to your quality Greenacres Turf is the right surface. Below you will find some information on various soils best suited to your turf needs.

If you don't have enough soil when preparing your site to achieve final levels, you need to bring in materials for the root zone. You could use one of the following:

  • Sand and Organic Matter Mixes;
  • Sand; or
  • Sand and Loam Mixes.

Sand and Organic Matter Mixes

Sand and Organic Matter mixes are often sold as 'Lawn Mixes', 'Lawn Blends' or as 'Landscapers Mixes'.

Landscaper and Lawn Mixes are made by mixing sand with organic materials such as peat, composted sawdust, brewers waste and sewerage sludge. They have the advantages of holding water and of containing some nutrients in organic form. These mixes are often used by professional landscapers.

Sand

There are many different sands available. Most of them are given names after their use in the building industry.

There are some typical sands that you can use.

Screened Cream

Screened Cream is commonly used as fill for house pads. It is satisfactory for lawns, but tends to dry out unless carefully irrigated. Screened cream is a good choice is you are laying your lawn near a road verge or other areas where vehicles are parked.

Plasterers Sand

Plasterers Sand has a texture mid-way between Screened Cream sand and Brickies' Sand, and is an ideal lawn sand.

Topsoil Sand

Topsoil Sands are often advertised and, because of their black colour, they are often favoured by home owners. Usually, they contain little organic matter other than a thin skin that coats the sand grains, so this is probably not a good lawn sand.

Sand and Loam Mixes

Sandy_Loam_Mix.jpgSand and Loam Mixes combine the easy-working and free draining characteristics of sand with the water and nutrient holding characteristics of loams. Sand and Loam Mixes are highly recommended by Greenacres Turf Farm as the best lawn surface.

Choosing the Depth of Root Zone Sand

Often you have no choice in the depth of root zone material, and generally you just need enough to get the levels right.

However, if you do have a choice, 150mm is a minimum depth, 200mm is satisfactory, and 300mm is ideal.
