Extensive testing has resulted in Greenacres Turf Farm spreading a soil amendment on each new planting area, producing the perfect surface. We are now pleased to be able to promote our exclusive soil amendment product.
There are a lot of different products on the worldwide market claiming to have good water retention performance. They can generally be classified into two different product types, when considering their capacity to save water relative to their own weight:
- Highly Concentrated Products; and
- Low effective products.
Highly Concentrated Products
These are also called Super-Absorbers (SAP - Super Absorber Polymer). These products can absorb a big quantity of water compared to their own weight. There are a lot of different product names on the market but most of them provide similar performance. Depending on the chemical structure, they have a longer or shorter effective life, greater or lesser water saving capacity, more or less salt sensitivity, etc.
The origin of these products was the usage for sanitary products such as nappies for babies, sanitary napkins, etc.
Low Effective Products
These products are very different concerning their makeup and performance, so that within this group a lot of individual classifications could be done. Their collective characteristic is that they must be handled in large volume and/or with special equipment.
Organic matter, for example compost or peat, is very often used for the purpose of improving the water holding capacity of the soil. In fact, it mostly improves the soil structure but not the water retention. Decomposition of organic matter is also very quick.
Where does Greenacres Turf Farm's Soil Amendment Product fit in?
Greenacres Soil Amendment product does not fit into either of these categories. By developing our soil amendment product, we have created a new category!
Our Soil Amendment product is a special development, protected by international patents, that combines characteristics of both categories to eliminate their disadvantages, and to emphasise the advantages. The result is a product that consists mainly of natural stone powders (silicate based), that are treated with special carbon compounds and specialized cellulose types.
It has a relatively high water saving ability compared to its own weight. It is a long lasting and highly efficient product, that can be easily utilized without having the disadvantages of the other products.
Our Soil Amendment product is effective in all kinds of soils, but most water saving can be reached in sand based root zones or root zones made of expanded clay, lava granules or something similar.
Advantages
- It is easily applicable because it can be handled like mineral fertiliser. Recommended application quantities do not require a big effort for transport, spreading or mixing into the soil.
- Rapidly absorbs water. After first water contact, our soil amendment product is quickly separated into its original particles and they are automatically filling the available air pores. The original particles are so small, so that 100% of the material can be effective in the air pores without any losses. Other water retention products can take up to 24 hours to begin water absorption.
- Plants will be able to survive longer periods between rainfall events. Our product maintains adequate water tension to release moisture at a steady rate as the surrounding soil particles dry out. Other water retention products have been shown to dump water very quickly, as the surrounding soil dries and subsequently soil water capillary tension increases. - Does not waterlog the soil. Once the field capacity of the soil is reached, water will then infiltrate through the soil profile at the original rate of the existing soil media.
- Product life span and effects of product (water and nutrients saving, deep and strong roots and healthy plants) are long lasting.
- Maximises fertiliser, herbicide and pesticide up-take, because of reduced irrigation quantity. In addition, environmental benefits occur as these products will not be as readily leached into nearby water systems.
- No influence in performance because of drying process and re-saturation.
- Water savings of minimum 50% and up to even 75% in sandy soils are possible!
Compared to these advantages, Greenacres Soil Amendment product has the best performance, compared to its price, during its total lifetime.
