Advantages of Santa Ana
Once Santa Ana is established, it has a lower water and fertiliser requirement than most other lawns. It is a very dense hybrid couch, so it is very resistant to wear, weed invasion, and is very weed and insect resistant.
Santa Ana also has excellent low temperature colour retention; it is the most shade tolerant of the couches, requiring only 3 ˝ - 4 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Disadvantages of Santa Ana
Being a very dense hybrid couch, Santa Ana needs mowing once a week during the warmer months (typically November through to March). If over fertilised, the lawn will become spongy, and then may be scalped when being mowed. Santa Ana does require de-thatching once a year, preferably during the months of October and November.
To maintain its beautiful velvet appearance, Santa Ana is best mown with a reel mower.
