Mowing Information

Recovered_Sir_Walter.jpgMowing is one of the keys to having a brilliant home lawn. Your best option for lawn care is to use a professional lawn mowing contractor. But if you wanted to maintain your own lawn, follow these guidelines for the best results.

Mowing Your Lawn

One of the most important tips is that you can't mow too frequently, but you can mow too closely. The more you mow your lawn, the better it will be. But mowing it too low could mean bad results.

During the warmer months, try to mow your lawn weekly. Some cool season grasses require mowing twice a week during the summer. During winter, try to mow your lawn fortnightly. Mowing during winter removes dead grass, controls weeds, and keeps the lawn tidy - even if not much grass is cut. Resist the temptation to mow too short.

Mowing Height

Mowing_Ht_Check.jpgAlways mow at the correct height, taking into account to change your mowing height for the different seasons.

Warm season Couch grasses such as Winter Green and Santa Ana should be mown at a height of 10mm in the summer, and 25mm in the winter.

The soft leaf Buffalos can be left at a height of 12mm in the summer, and as much as 30mm in the winter.

Cool season grasses like Tall Fescue should be mown at a height of 30-40mm throughout the year.

Removal of Clippings

For best results, you should remove clippings after mowing. But don't throw the clippings out with your rubbish. Lawn clippings are rich in nutrients, and should be composted to use as mulch, or simply spread them over your gardens.

Use a Good Mower

Cylinder (reel) mowers give a much better cut than rotary mowers, but only if they are sharp and adjusted correctly.

Use a blower to blow clippings and debris off paths, paving and driveways.

Use a line trimmer to remove long grass around posts, and an edger to clean the edges alongside gardens and paths.
